unreal is extremely slow on iMac

Also want to mention that I worked on the port of Batman Arkham Asylum and did almost all the graphics/performance work for the port of Batman Arkham City - as they were UE3 games they were built against the much older Direct3D 9 renderer. They certainly look impressive games, but as graphics technology goes they are dramatically simpler than UE4 and thus less demanding of hardware. Even so, it took a lot of effort to get slower GPUs like the Intel HD 4000 to run Arkham City at a decent lick.

Thanks for the info, Marksatt. It would be nice if the editor could handle mobile-grade games on Intel HD 4000 level graphics because there are so many Apple laptops that use that graphics hardware. But I understand that it canā€™t be the biggest priority, especially when the issue is caused by an Apple / Intel bug.

Good news! I have confirmed that the bug we were having to work around was fixed in 10.10 & so from 4.6 onward the Intel GPUs should see a significant performance increase when running on 10.10 and later. How much faster will depend on the scene complexity, but it should be noticeable in almost all cases.

Iā€™d give up

Basically, youā€™d save a lot of hassle if you realise that Unreal engine is never going to support these graphics cards like this. (Despite their protestations that they are working to make it run well on laptops etc.) Theyā€™ve made too much code reliable on the latest graphics card features and it would take them too much time to make a version to run on cards like Intel HD3000 despite the fact that a lot of laptops and mac books use this. Unreal Engine was designed to work with the latest high spec computers - as it was designed for people in large computer games companies rather than hobbyists. Before their change of mind to target it at the general public. Even so they have a particular type of person in mind who they are selling it to. The type of person who builds their own PC with the latest graphics cards and has spent hundreds or even thousands of pounds on their ā€œkitā€. Probably they also have built in their own cooling systems and fluorescent lighting into their PCs!

Try Unity3D instead. That works great even on laptops. (And even just about on netbooks!)

Can you give a figure for the speed increase? If you want more money from me to upgrade to the latest Unreal engine I need to know precise figures! Will it work with Intel HD3000 now?

10.10 what? What is 10.10? Is it the version of the driver? The version of the graphics card? The date 10th October? The version of Unreal? What is 10.10?

i think , he is talking about OSX 10.10 , i am wrong ? i am a wincrap user only ^^

10.10 is the version number for OS X Yosemite. The code change will be in UE4 4.6. Sorry for the confusion.

I donā€™t have precise figures, largely because it is so dependent on scene complexity. This wonā€™t help Intel HD3000 GPUs as they still suffer from a GPU driver bug that seriously restricts performance in UE4 under OS X.

Perhaps not the thread for it, however it is iMac related so perhaps it is. Have you guys been able to test UE with the new iMacs, with either GPU?

No, weā€™ve not had to test a new iMac yet, sorry.

i have a i7 650m and it runs flawless and high frame rate on my computer. Maybe itā€™s time you switch back to PC.

Has Epic been able to run further tests with OSX and MBPā€™s? I run a tone of 3D software all at once on my machine whilst rendering in others and I dont really have any problems. Similarly, I run Unity on my laptop to test to see if its something other than the GPU but it run fine.

Iā€™m hoping thereā€™s more information about this issue now and that some improvements have been made to the latest release 4.10.0 ā€“ Iā€™m still getting a lot of lag when doing simple things like dragging and dropping content into my scene.

Any ideas?

I donā€™t think you can develop any game with an imac. That machine is more suited for fancy graphics design and music

iMac actually as the best value for hardware if youā€™re wanting to develop a game. Many 's donā€™t have a dedicated GPU while iMac does, and at a better cost.

One of the things to keep in mind when developing on Macā€™s these days is that they usually run at a very high resolution, which coupled with the low-end graphics card means they arenā€™t going to run 3D intensive programs very well.

Thatā€™s unlikely, if Iā€™m rendering something in 3D on a powerful machine, then Iā€™ll notice a performance difference in anything that I do. And any 3D intensive software will affect other 3D intensive software if you run them at the same time.

Letā€™s be clear that building a pc from parts is always the best value. In terms of mac, it still is best value. Hackintosh forever.

Hackintosh isnā€™t technically legal, but as far as what Macā€™s are available to purchase, the iMac is the best value for something that can develop games.

I did not know that, there are plenty of computer shops around here that sell hackintoshes. Iā€™ve even seen them at rent-a-centers. I just assumed apple sold the os.

Itā€™s in the EULA that youā€™re only allowed to install OSX on Mac hardware
