Unreal Engine going to be NOT FREE in 2024 !?! (For non Gaming Projec)

I doubt they would lose most userbase and the UE comparison with “AI solutions” is absurd. Spending money on something that makes you money is pretty normal, it’s investment.

So far it looks like student/educators are going to be free and some non-profit independent movie maker should also be safe and for game dev. nothing changes. So this alone clears a massive portion of userbase from changes…

Question that remains, is what is going to be revenue threshold for non-game content and if you cross that threshold what is the pricing? I’m not against paying for my sw, but the comparison to maya made me sweat a little bit as a starting “developer”.

So that really, really bad news, even for game developers too, Ive spend many time and money for learning and buying the assets here, that are usable only with UE, maybe now time to use other options, where the same assets are complett for other engines too. I like the UE engine very much and its a great job from UE, but is it worth to drive ferrari if its to expensive? Maybe the inexpensive porshe doit the great job too. Today non gaming maybe tomorrow gaming too. I lost trust now. I will be reconsider my time and money investment for the future here. So please think carefully for next steps i would be reluctantly change the engine but i will be ready. Anyway thanks for good game engine and the time here.

For the record.
This is what I do with Unreal

So am I right, I need to be student or educator to use Unreal for free in 2024. I am none of those anymore, but I wanted to learn Unreal and not use it commercial for the first one or two years. If I had to pay to learn something I would switch. That would be a real dumpster move. But I am not shure if I got it right.
Epic and Unity seem to loose their Minds. Will still take a look at Godot Engine. There is no problem in paying something back if big money is made but everyone seem to start drain every penny out of everything and destroy everything by this. Look at Unity. Who will trust those guys again?

Seriously hope it will be as promised with the sliding scale. Working class smucks like us who have day jobs and just mess around with short films are left alone.

One the other hand if I started entering film festivals and other contests that have some serious prize money (over a few grand) that money would be invested back into the production of other projects.

Just setting the record straight here.

For non-game projects you’ll need to purchase annual subscription seats at $1850 USD per seat, but only if your company is making more than $1M total gross revenue per year. Otherwise it’s free.

Students and schools, hobbyists and businesses with <$1M/y can use it for free!

You can read more about it in this post.
