Unreal engine 5.4.4 crashes opening static meshes and materials

No, we updated to unreal engine 5.4.4 and suddenly the faculty teaching unreal engine started experiencing excessive crashes. The prior version we had installed (5.4.3) would crash from time to time but with the upgrade to 5.4.4, all of the faculty teaching and working with unreal began experiencing a severe number of crashes. It is happening with students as well.
For one professor, we upgraded his lab to preview 5.5 a few weeks ago and the crashes have ceased for him. We will not push preview unreal preview 5.5 campus wide but we would like a stable product as unreal is a significant part of the gaming development curriculum at SCAD.
