We are making some core changes to support our ethics and mission.
Mission: Promote decentralization
Open source everything. Let the devs and studios customize and run entire backends for themselves. Benefit from the creativity of an inspired developer community.
Multiplayer games still require high performance, realtime, dedicated servers. Especially in the case of competitive games, or games with an economy, these servers need to be under control of the game developer. Now, you can roll out an unlockd backend for a game, studio, or gaming community. While each instance is still centralized, the distributed installations help to decentralize overall.
Mission: Promote bitcoin
There is no need for a site token or altcoin when Bitcoin has moved into and maintained a position of authority and dominance.Bitcoin is the way, and we want to help integrate with the gaming world.
We will also be moving to a non-kyc authentication solution, using lnurl, web5, or other bitcoin-based auth tools when they become available. In the meantime, we will be adopting a nostr-like solution of temporary private/public keys.
We will also be integrating lightning payments into and out of the backend. We will be encouraging users to remove all SATS from the backend when done with the day’s gaming session.
Mission: Support Developers
Indie and small studios need backend game solutions. Providing complete open source access allows devs and studios to host their own backend with their own customizations. And, we encourage devs to research other solutions and use what is best for them.
Sunsetting uetopia
We will be shutting down the uetopia.com backend in January 2024, as we stand up the new unlockd backend (in development). Devs will have until that time to move existing games to the new official backend, or run their own instance of the backend.
Hosted Backend Fees
We are keeping our 5% game income fee, which helps us to cover our backend expenses. If you don’t like this fee, just run a copy of the backend yourself, and do whatever you want. But, you’ll find that you need to have a similar fee included to pay for your own backend costs. YMMV
