I’m having problems with the texture as you can see from the picture. The result is very blurry. I tried to change settings, I tried to unwrap more than once changing parameters but the result does not change or improves it by very little.
Where am I doing wrong? Is it an acquisition problem or just settings? I used scans from a Faro Scanner and in the point cloud in Scene the image is sharper.
Thanks in advance.
Texture quality in your project is 100%, this means that even if you will change the unwrap settings, there will be not much difference
This is because input quality of the images from the saner is not the best.
If you need higher quality textures it is advised to include in you laser scan project images from hand held camera too.
looking at your screenshot it could be something else, too.
RC has a bug where the sweet preview uses a much reduced resolution to display it. The reduction varies greatly from almost not noticeable to very pixelated. If my suspicion is correct, then your example would be the record. Try to render an orthophoto with a high enough resolution, then you can see the real result.
I tried to render the scene and the quality improved slightly.
I have also checked the original photos taken by the laser scanner and they are not excellent so I think it is mainly due to this even if the 360° photo of the room it’s better than the 3D model final result.
I have an other question, I have several scans with related photos that overlap, how does RC work for choosing the texture to use? Is there a way to choose to use this and not that?
Ah, I didn’t realize that you’Re only using the scan!
Then there won’t be any texture, at least not of the kind of the 360 created by the scanner itself.
RC converts the scanned pointcloud into 6 images arranged like a cube, they correspond to the 6 files that are created for each scanner station when converted. If you look at one of them (you can click them in the 1Ds menu), do they look more like the 3D model? Especially the blue colour of the light coming through the doorway should look similar, which should not happen otherwise.
I am aware of the 360 ° photos and the cubes present in the mesh created in RC. I’ll explain to you what I did so you can tell me where I’m wrong, how to fix and where to improve.
I import my raw scans in Faro Scene where I align them and assign the photos always taken with the laser scanner;
I export them in .ptx in one single file and import it in RC using the exact existing registration with the color;
I do the alignment again in RC, I create my mesh, unwrap and texture it.
I’m not sure I can tell you exactly what you need to do to improve since I can’t see all your input data.
The only thing I can contribute is that technically speaking in this workflow you can’t expect a texture at all, at least not a good one. The reason is that there aren’t any “real” images for RC to use, only the coloured pointcloud.
I did a quick test and it really seems to be like I suspected - RC creates a texture from the converted images. Again, those are a translation of the coloured pointcloud, which are then used (in whatever way RC sees fit) to produce a texture. Very roundabout.
Since you say that with the rendering the quality is a bit better, I think that that is probably as good as it is going to get - the quality of the 360 is also only a bit better. The main problem seems to me the blue in the doorway. I guess this is caused by some internal reason for processing. After all, the laserscans are never meant to be used for texturing directly, which probably why the standard setting for the texturing weight is 0.01 …
so the ‘colorize’ method is more appropriate for laser scanner files? As far as I know it goes to color the vertices unlike the texture that is ‘glued’ to the mesh, is it correct?
Is there a way to export only the texture created by RC? I was thinking of modifying it and importing it again. Do you think it could be a good solution to fix it? Unfortunately I don’t have the possibility to go back to that place to take the images for the texture.
As for the blue in the doorway, I think I can solve the problem by exporting the scans individually from Scene, in order to give RC more ‘freedom’ to process…
yes, colorize does what you describe - whether that is better or not I can’t say because it depends on what you want or need.
Yes, it is possible to export the texture alone but I’m not sure how exactly (I think via the mesh export menu and there’S a dropdown). It’s covered in the forum and should be in the help as well.
