sudden roughness

Interesting, I’ve been seeing quite a lot of this sort of surface triangulation but putting it down to specular features or an artifact of choosing the wrong smoothing parameters (I’m smoothing then simplifying and get residual single triangle peaks/dents in the mesh).
Here is a smoothed, simplified surface showing the pimples:

Or mine may be completely unrelated… Nice scan setup btw - was it a commercial rig or something you put together?
