The base part of Painting reversal effects was created using Houdini.
The simulation created in Houdini was exported as Particle data to VAT (vertex animation texture). The exported VAT was adjusted to play back in Niagara, and DynamicParameter was used to control the simulation time freely in the sequencer. Here is the Houdini simulation playing backwards.
