Show Residuals

Either there is some inconsistency with toggling “residuals” or I don’t understand the mechanism.
I thought it is selected for each panel separately.
However it happens quite often that all of a sudden Residuals is deselected again and I cannot figure out why.
Would it be possible to move this button to Alignment, it would make more sence to me there.
Also it would be more easily manageable if it would be triggered for all 2D panels - pretty much like Ray of Sight too…

Hi Götz,
residuals rendering tool is owned by a particular 2D view. Therefore its on/off switch is in context ribbon of the particular view.

It shows a line between where is 3D point projected to the image and where is image measurement corresponding to this 3D point. The smaller the residual line is - the better alignment precision is.

Hi martinb,

yes, I understand how it works an I use it alot.
As a layperson, I see it very much related to all the other alignment tools, so to me it would make more sence there.
If it has an internal reason, that’s ok - not too dificult to get used to.

But I still have the problem that at seemingly random points it just switches off.
Sometimes it is ok for dozens of switches between cameras in one panel, and then it changes after only a few.
Any idea what that might be related to?
Maybe I just don’t understand the concept of the panels properly.
So far I thought that a view setting is panel-specific, so it should not just change the settings automatically, right?

Related to that: It would be nice to have the settings saved after close and restart…

I also was having this problem – sometimes the residuals won’t show up and I couldn’t figure out why.

Then I figured it out. It was because I had the wrong component selected, and the images weren’t registered in that component. A single image will have different residuals for different components, and no residuals if you’ve selected a component in which it is not registered.

The fact that which component is selected affects the behavior of everything was extremely confusing to me at first. I think this needs to be emphasized more to the user somehow. For example, the Selected input(s) panel has a Registered (True/False) property and I always figured that this told me whether or not the image had been registered into any component. It doesn’t – it tells you if the image is registered in the currently selected component, which I found totally unexpected.

Residuals will be explained a bit more in the next application Help update under Geo-referencing a Model.

I have to revive this one because I still don’t understanding this weird behavior and it’s getting frustrating.

When I switch residuals on in each of the 4 views, it turns off seemingly by itself at random times.
View 1 and 2 seem to remember the setting better than 3 and 4.
It doesn’t seem to have to do anything with loading a new project.
Do I have to save a custom setting for this to be permanent?

Tips are greatly appreciated.

I finally figured it out.
Residuals will be switched off, when a view has been empty, e.g. by selecting the already displayed image a second time.
Can this be fixed?

I’m going to give this one a CPR.

With the new automatic placement of CPs, the residuals are being switched off all the time.

This is very frustrating since I make use of this feature a lot and I would greatly appreciate it, if something could be done about it. Preferably also in connection with tying all 4 views together for activation.

Or is there a key assigned for switching on residuals?

If not, could at least that be considered?
