Scientific Research (Agent Based Modelling-ABMS and Gaming Simulation)

Just came across your question and am investigating ABMS/MAS for large project plans with thousands of tasks carried out by 100s of human and industrial machine agents over a period of weeks/months/years. I want to do the reverse of heuristic task optimisation by “playing” out plans like a multi-scenario simulation tool using NPCs in a game environment with the ability to go back and view the action in time.

Unreal has AI behaviour tree blueprints which could work but you could also use something like AnyLogic and simulate in there with output rendered in Unreal, although that is quite an expensive piece of kit, so I would much prefer NetLogo or something else which is free and opensource.

Would really appreciate any guidance if you could share your learnings.
