Reforming the RTS genre

@theevil128 : multiplayer network load will certainly make stricter limits than singleplayer, so probably have to create different game modes. I have no time frame and financial problems currently because have no team, but I’m sure my future team is going to be small, only a few artists, thus including too many complex features would lead to a neverending development… On the other hand, without ambitions for making something really new it is useless to start…

@GrowingTree : you can send me a private message

This is it!

Starcraft is the worst case scenario of a RTS known as MRTS(MICRO RTS) it has nothing of immersion or strategic warfae only simple Stone Scissor Stone Paper mechanics there you shooting the energy bar down in which units are hewn at each other. No hit feedback no hitzones an a minimalized sub basese building. i think in 1998 starcraft was really impressive but would not have needed a follower that does not evolve these great mechnics in a more immersive way. Starcrat is a Blizzard child and especially developed for compettitive E-Sport play.

The scenario of my game is really fresh but i dont wont to talk about, it could copy someone. :stuck_out_tongue: Sry…

Since UE4.12 this little tool Oodle Compression is natively supportet by UE. Why not use it and make a comparision with native code and oodle to show how effective it could be while optimization. Lets say as additional feature of your plugin for power users.

thanks, earlier I have not heard any support of it in ue4, and found no further info, only that it is said to be existing and used in Paragon… maybe not a cheap stuff.

You’re welcome. i only remember a short description in 4.12 and further releases some points with oodle named. This could eliminate some bottle necks speed up the whole thing.
Theres no info about the costs, but from the homepage under licensing tab stays the info-> We generally license per game and per platform, but we have other options for unusual licensing situations, so call us if you have any questions. Ask for nothing, but it would be a good addition imo.

, pls check PM. I have something interesting for you.
Best

Ive want to discuss some special things about your plugin, so sended you an PM.
Regards

So far the Holy Grail is not found… probably it does not exist
What I think to include in an RTS for sure:

  • base building, and resource gathering (it enables different play styles and extends ways of winning, requiring careful planning i.e. strategy; different staring positions and resources available can add fun and variations)
  • technology development, where “technology” can be anything, like religious or magical achievements
  • politics and trade with other players, detailed player relations (limits aggressive military tactics, having strong vassals can be better than razed conquered lands, owners of rare resources can be in special gameplay position)
  • multiple winning conditions and game modes (conquer, dominance or overall strength, wealth, religious/magical leading role, cooperative/alliance winning etc.), in case of multiplayer a faster game pace could be needed, while it does not matter in single player mode
  • singleplayer, multiplayer, and mixed mode (some minor AI factions can add some fun to multiplayer)
  • large game area, which is limited by performance (AI and pathfinder implementation, rendering), so an overview map - RTS map combo would be great (real time or turn based), but not essential, really depends on actual game…
  • shorter historic timeframe, thus the mood of the game can be tweaked better (the game does not have to be historic, can also be based on mythology or fantasy themes), requires more careful technology development features
  • game modding possibilities (I started game creation with modding, it is fun and good for creating an active community)
These are only the main features I see primarily important at the moment.

That is an open truth. But I like the approach to Knights of Honor very well because I like to play this game for many hours, it would be nice if there were some elements in the plugin. Whats about the cover system, are already included ??

This game is really inspiring
At the beginning of 2017 there was an Poll from the developers to manifest feautres for the game and the most common voted are realized since the poll.
2017 was sobering and almost disappointing, but the year 2018 will be a good year for RTS fans. yayy

The irony. On one hand we are looking for the next groundbreaking RTS , on the other corner people are still playing classics , asking for classics and remastering are happening left and right.

I would play a re-booted Age of Mythology / Warcraft 3 any day. No new features needed , just better overall aesthetics and more modern interfaces.

I really love Knights of Honor and Age of Mythology, the 1st has no sequel, so might be a good basis of a new game concept, AoM has a new HD version, and a new Age of Empires game is also coming, so making an Age of Clonegame is not really a reasonable decision at the moment, which does not mean that an RTS should not get inspiration from it, it would be difficult as the series have had a strong effect on the genre.
Currently I think multiplayer mode has more limits on gameplay than I would like, I like long gameplay (and saving reloading when I have a little time to play), which is impossible in multiplayer, so it should be a bit simplified and time limited version of the singleplayer…
I made no cover system in my RTS because I designed it for different type of warfare, I added it to my other project which is a WW2 FPS/RTS hybrid like Frozenfire’s Eximius.

yeah it has became a research existing features and games thread :frowning: I’m a bit surprised by some posts saying that no new stuff needed at all, everything good is already found out, which is not really creative and inspiring, if the aim is to create something new, fresh and fun, that can be competitive with other genres too, attracting more players…

but it is finished now, imo it was fine to identify features to be kept, what can be a solid basis of new ideas hopefully. in the wrong case, it can be restrictive of course…

so please write any idea here bravely, like a brainstorming, without evaluating others, it should be done only later…

The most classical RTS/ TBS games has a good idea but not thinking it to end, why not think the ideas to end in and new modern way!?

I found an interesting article: The decline, evolution and future of the RTS: Page 2 | PC Gamer
btw I’m working on a game concept…
