Reallusion's Character Creator 3

Today Reallusion raised the quality bar

My experience with CC3 so far is for the most parts very positive. There are however a few things which require extra attention, often depending on the character content in use. Also plan to test facial morphing, but not sure how exactly to sync voice with face morphs, ideas?

How do those heads look inside Unreal? Does anyone have this Virtual Humans pack and can post a render, please?

With current discount, Character Creator 3 Essential Bundle for $250 looks really tempting, considering that usually this package (CC + Export abilities + some basic content) costed around $500 - 600.
Just not sure, if CC alone can also do lipsync or if I need iClone for that.

You need content packs to create, I don’t think you need the offer with IRay. I spent a four digit figure and have now a basic repertoire to make fantasy or present day looking characters. For audio see this forum https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/marketplace/1553622-ultimate-dialogue-plugin

I guess, the Essentials bundle content pack is just a minimal starter (although somewhat expensive with the export license) to get the taste of the process and have some base to work with, but it should not be mandatory to buy other content from Realillusion’s store because you can import assets created in other tools, right?

At least their editions comparison page has import OBJ and FBX specified for CC3.

So, you are not locked into their content ecosystem at all. If only they have good set of tutorials for creating custom content and there are no hidden license terms that mess something up.

In general, it’s nice to see their CC3 Pipeline edition being updated to become a standalone product. But I suspect that there still will be some character design activities that will need iClone 7 (for example, creating new animation clips through body and face pupeteering).

So, it’s still somewhat confusing for newcomers. At least, after you have bought CC3 Pipeline, they seem to offer a special member price for iClone, too, but I’m not sure if that discounted price still will be there after the Cyber Monday and other holidays.

Anyway, I’ve seen some serious people look skeptically at Daz3D saying that “it is meant for po*n” and that it has crappy materials, not optimal for UE4 and that Daz3D characters have some kind of their own “uncannyness” that can be recognized immediately etc. Hopefully. Realillusion’s products will be treated more seriously and receive wider use, which means more tutorials, more content and more integration with UE4.

Their normal price without discount is somewhat too high for an indie dev or a hobbyist, but it all depends what their target audience is and what reputation RI will maintain.

As a member you usually get a discount, also there are usually monthly discounts too.

There are only very few Daz content packs on the market and they seem normal to me.

The thing is when I started I bought models from literally everywhere, but then most of the times no Epic Skeleton compatibility, or only few models, or cloth issues. With CC3 and the content packs I bought there is a good amount of combinations available. I did not even bothered with importing stuff yet, so cannot comment on that. Usually you have to adjust materials, in one instance (one specific content pack)I had to fix a misaligned bone, which was possible using a bone node on the AnimInstance. Another pack has shadows baked on the textures. But now I am pretty much set, can create all the humanoid characters for my games.

Thanks for sharing your experience, unit23.

I guess I’ll grab CC3 while it’s available and see if I can do everything I need with it. Although I highly suspect that lipsync is not available in CC and I will need iClone for that. Their wav import lipsync seems really good in demo videos, but only after applying smoothing function - it makes a huge difference and kudos to RI team for thinking about this.

I somehow didn’t notice any wrinkle map animations - these too would add more realism to facial expressions. Maybe they could be somehow added manually applying material visibility variables in UE4 and attaching them to morph target variables. Still, it would be nice to have them in CC->UE4 pipeline out-of-the-box.

Have been playing with CC3 for some time and it’s good, but still lacks some of the iClone features. iClone itself is affordable enough and I would grab it to add animation and lipsync functionalities to my pipeline, but unfortunately you cannot simply export things out of iClone the same way you do from CC3. You need 3DXchange software which - oh no! - costs more than iClone and CC3 together!

Accidentally I tried to open an iAvatar in CC and observed curious behavior. During the loading process, the loaded iAvatar model was rendered in the CC viewport and it seemed to load just fine… and then at the very end it displayed a popup saying that iAvatars are not supported in CC, and the almost completely loaded model reverted to the CC base. It felt somewhat artificially enforced limitation to me - the model was already visible, why then “not supported”?

It seems somewhat unusual approach to separate export/import functionality into a distinct (and so expensive) product, and it makes Reallusion ecosystem confusing for newcomers. IMHO, 3DXchange should be phased out and merged into iClone and CC. While there are some positive signs (FBX export integrated directly into iClone) but you are still required to have the Pipeline license for 3DXchange for it to work, and it seems that iClone doesn’t have those LOD and material optimization tools of CC when exporting. So yeah, it gets very messy and expensive when you want to get iClone things into a game engine.

I know it’s ridiculous

How to setup Advanced Locomotion V3 “Foot IK” with Character Creator 3 Skeleton (No IK Bones)

If you have CC3 Pipeline, you do not need 3DXchange at all to export your characters with motions. You do need iClone to create motions.

There is a box to load all the motions you want into the FBX export from CC3P. Check out this video.

What about the commercial license? On Reallusion website FAQ I couldn’t find a clear explanation about it. Is a royalty free license for created characters with Character Creator 3 now being a standalone product included or not? So is it just a $199 price for a perpetual license including full commercial use or is it way more expensive like other Reallusion products that require an additional commercial license that has always been pretty limited to a single project and such ?

I’m quite noob with Character Creator and all of its ecosystem, please enlight my way a little bit… how could I add more characters and SPECIALLY clothes and hairs? the only way is to buy a content pack in their marketplace? is it possible to import packs from other sites? any link? ;)

You need to contact the marketing people to apply for the free mass distribution right. Once they approve your project, you can use RL content in your game commercially. But I don’t know how this application process exactly works or whether you would be limited in any way when you sell your game with RL content in it. Would like to know it…

Import character fbx from Character Creator 3. Data Table required

Every time I try to import the cc3 character this dialog box pops up asking me to select the data table type but whatever I select crashes the program If I click close and skip this Datatable, it doesn’t matter too many parameters and with missing LODS making the mesh look ugly and materials with soft groups are not imported.

This is the json file generated by character creator 3:

I exported my character with InstaLod to get the same visual quality as the Character C3 editor on Unreal Engine but I am experiencing this problem.

This is very unusual, may hint at an engine bug related to data tables. Stephen Ellis Upon import there should be a resolution import popup not a datatable popup. Do you use 4.23?

Please make sure that you only import the FBX file, as outlined in this video. The datatable popup is opened if you try to also import the CC3 related JSON file, which is the likely culprit of the error.

This is a big turn down for me, I was exploring CC3 to use as my game art pipeline but if it depends on approval letter from anybody it’s a big NO NO! Imagine working for a year on your game, and then not getting approved by them…Hell no, I’ll stick to Blender!
