Questions about Multi-User Editing

Salut. We are a team of 3 indie developers that are working on our first game from different countries, so we saw that Multi-User Editing worked with a VPN of our choice and it’s wonderful to be working on the same project with everyone not living under the same roof. However, during these days of use of the widget we stumbled with a few problems that we can’t seem to manage to find a solution for. Here are some of them (I’m the host of the VPN and the project and all working with UE5.1.1):

  1. When I create a new folder for others to see and I start to fill them with their assets, they never appear on their copy of the project, no matter if I save the project or not. They can only see it if I fill those folders with a “dummy” material so that it updates on their end. It doesn’t work if the new folder contains another empty folder. I’m forced to put a “dummy” material on each in order for my teammates to see them.
  2. If my teammates worked on something new while I was offline, their changes to the project never merges with mine and I don’t know how to make their new stuff to appear on my end. We managed to find a “workaround” by means of duplicating the assets in their folders and delete the original one and changing the name of the duplicate to the original’s, but this doesn’t work if they have done changes to the level on the viewport like adding bridges, houses or trees. Is there a way for them to merge their offline changes with my project? I also thought that we could just duplicate the level map and do the workaround, but if I’ve been working on that map while they were offline, my changes will be lost with this method. We need to merge stuff, even if those changes on the map level overlaps (like a tree clipping through a new bridge – those can be tweaked by hand)
  3. Not “game breaking” but I like to use colour coded folders for the others to see where related assets should be placed. Isn’t there any way to make even these small changes to appear on their end too?

If someone can shed some light on these it would be very appreciated. We’re amateurs at working with this new widget and with the concept of working in projects like this with more than one person on it. I just hope we don’t need to use more third-party tools to make this to work because I think with the VPN is enough as third-party tools and we’d desire that UE5 could help ease the topic of working with teammates that are abroad so that merging changes would never require to install more extra stuff in our computers than necessary.
