Also lets admit, AI assets that are not flagged as AI is just dishonest, something should be done about it.
What’s gonna happen now? or What could be happen if everybody uploads 35K 2D or Generated 3d basic meshes? Future not looks bright.
it’s 38K now (19K of which are not marked as generated with AI).
What a dumb idea OP, Jesus Christ. It completely misses the point of solving the issue and doesn’t encourage small sellers to start selling on FAB at all.
$10USD or even $5USD, while might be pocket change to people on USA or Europe, it’s a days work to a lot of people around the world, might even be weeks or months in some poor countries. Doing that would only benefit the people that is already making quite a buck in the marketplace and make everyone else go to some other website to sell their stuff.
What they need is to outright IP BAN all AI slop from the marketplace and permaban the idiots doing that. Just punish the ones flooding the market with slop and not those who unfortunately can’t afford to pay for every little thing. What’s next? Barricading the website with a ‘invite only’ basis and charge monthly for access?
Raising prices is by no shape or form a way to encourage growth and a healthy environment. It’ll only encourage people to sell their stuff elsewhere and rip off everything that’s over here (which is already happening, btw). Asking for a fee is literally asking to the marketplace to die.
I am in favor of anything that results in better curation of content on the storefront. There’s too much low effort garbage, including things like blueprints that are specific to one type of project or require massive rebuilding to adapt to new projects. There’s no reason we should be forced to look at mass produced AI garbage, and there’s no reason they should be trying to sell us unpolished game systems that were just ripped from somebody’s pet project. Finish your product before uploading it please.
Currently FAB does not support regional pricing at all . Sellers can set a price at X dollars and nothing else can be configured.
80 lv just had a piece about the problem too:
That article is definitely not a good publicity for FAB
Oh look, I made it into an article! Too bad it’s not for the right reasons.
What’s frustrating is that most of the people speaking up are Unreal’s biggest supporters, people who’ve spent time building, learning, and contributing to the UE ecosystem.
But if flooding the store with 38,000 low effort assets just gets a response like, “Hold on, you forgot your tags—okay, all good, carry on!” … then it’s hard to see the point in continuing to care.
I was the first one to make this complaint on the forums. Fab is not a friendly place for artists to post and sell their creations. The people behind Fab clearly do not care. They keep allowing this useless slop to be shovelled on their store as it drowns out real assets from real artists.
If they cared they would have gotten rid of AI and banned all of those accounts from ever being allowed to steal content or post AI ever again.
no please no. i want to publish my stuff for free, not to have to pay for it.
Yes, we need a fee for publishing. 10 Euro / Dollar per asset is a good amount, it will prevent bad-faith actors flooding the marketplace with bad AI generated crap or copyright-breaking assets, ripped from movies and games.
The fee could be made recoupable, similar to how Steam does it, where you get it back once you earned a certain amount.
Sadly there is no other way, and if someone can’t pay 10 dollar to publish an asset, you have to ask how they can afford the hardware to create the assets in the first place.
Also they’re not counting on selling the asset enough to recover the $ 10 investment??
Yeah there are ways to approach this technically, price barriers don’t stop scammers. They just pay it and charge more, steam EGS did this and it didn’t solve anything, crappy games that make no money still release there, they just charge 30 dollars for it instead of 10.
We need government ID for sellers so alt accounts don’t happen, permabans for those who break the rules by mislabeling products, AI to check files for piracy and duplicates in the asset database(loci will do this I think), and upload limits per day/week to prevent spam like the 220 assets a day guy mentioned. If those things happen then I think the problem with AI spam and pirates reselling assets will stop. Additionally some type of refund guarantee for AI made assets would be a good policy for fab to have if they were duped or the seller isn’t helpful.
While charging a fee per upload could help prevent AI spam, it may also negatively impact small or independent creators. Sometimes, even if we spend a whole month creating an environment pack, sales may still be modest. Considering the 88% revenue share and additional challenges—like in my country, where each payout costs a $33 wire fee regardless of the amount—even earning $100 in sales might result in receiving less than $50 after fees. Also, Fab currently doesn’t allow us to set a minimum payout threshold, which adds to the difficulty.
The real issue lies with the misuse of AI. There should be stricter actions against accounts that mass-generate AI content and falsely present it as personal creative work—this is not only misleading, but it also damages the platform’s integrity. Temporary or permanent selling bans could be considered in such cases.
It would also help to bring back features like user reviews or community flagging/reporting for suspected AI-generated content. A more targeted investigation of accounts flooding the platform with AI-generated assets would be a better long-term solution than general penalties that affect all creators equally.
Note: My English is not very strong, so I used ChatGPT AI to help correct the grammar in this message.
This is a pretty reasonable take and something epic should look into.
FAB already asks this, otherwise you can’t set up payment etc. I don’t exactly remember where in the process you get asked for this (payment / tax interview / general profile setup?) But I remember it was part of it.
RGPD law make it illegal to keep those data
What? It’s not illegal for a company to store your drivers license, uber does it for their drivers. I don’t see why fab can’t do it too.
for the employee not the customer
