Feel free to ignore this. I have solved the issue I was having. I forgot to pass the variable to the function, which is why the default was being passed to the AI Controller. Maybe I should go back to school and re learn scope 
Anywho, thanks again for the heads up about behavior trees Veovis! I’ve made a lot of progress the last couple days, and plan on making a lot more!
