MS will probably behave if their hand is forced. But it takes consumers to speak up, as the Xbox 180 U-turn showed.
They’ve never quite recovered from that fiasco too, if selling half the number of consoles vs. Sony is anything to go by.
But you’re right its a big ‘what-if’. But the underhanded Malware like tactics of Win10 asks, how desperate are Microsoft?

MS had to eat humble-pie at the rise of Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, who the entire tech world are deeply envious of.
You only have to read this to see, as the ‘automotive telematics’ quote shows, ‘info slurping’ is now the only game in town.

So will MS be any good at monetizing users (beyond sales from new PC’s etc)…?

Well I definitely agree with you on the forced updates, it’s one of the things keeping me away from windows 10.

No, but there is blog from former microsoft employee describing that microsoft did all of this (in another parts of windows) out of incompetence and corporate politics between divisions.
I am just pointing out that sabotaging steam for microsoft would be extremely easy and impossible to proof malicious intentions, so they can do it without any risk.

Perhaps no legal risk sure, but don’t underestimate the power of a vast collective consumer mob.
