Oh wow, being featured on release is obviously a blessing.
Yeah the two releases (Stylized Low Poly Environment and FPS Horror Template) were both featured on release and sales were great, but pretty much dropped off after that.
There is no sensible way to explore/discover existing content hence the insane drop in sales after featuring. No usage of rating, no tags, no sorting. Also current search is extremely basic and looking only for exact phrase and nothing more.
It is exactly the worst user experience I had on any marketplace. If I want to find cool sci-fi asset on Unity store I open the store, choose price range, minimal rating and recently updated assets with sci-fi tag, then I sort by popularity or rating.
On UE4 Marketplace you have to brute force this wall of assets you don’t interested in before you find what you want =/
Yes, your asset can easily die from getting shoved off of page 1 of the new content tab because it becomes too hard to find. Especially if you deliberately make niche things.
Tags are long overdue. @zeOrb is right, this would go a long way in helping people to discover content.
Well in my opinion art assets would have a longer shelf line and constant return rate than blueprints but if the thinking is one is selling art then the returns will not be as impressive as it would be if the item was being sold as a product to be usable in someone else product. The number I would like to know is not how many units someone might be selling over time, as I doubt anyone doing serious numbers would be comfortable talking about their numbers, but how much traffic the marketplace generates every day.
Something else to consider is the marketplace is not the only game in town. Some of the stuff I see could easily be repackaged for Unity or even for Daz3D marketplace.
If one want’s to make a go of it though it’s about building up brand recognition over time and not about tossing something up that may or may not sell.
I would like to update this thread , so people start to share their information for 2017
 Nearly 2 years ago I was playing with the idea of creating content for the market place and this is what discouraged me. I’ve recently revisited the idea but I’m really disappointed nothing has done about this issue.
Secondly when I was making my own game the fact that I had search high and low to find the best market place content for my game discourage me from buying almost anything at all cause I couldn’t find what I wanted, but just by going through the first few pages of this thread today I’ve seen high quality blueprint templates that I never knew existed that would have boosted the quality of my game and literally saved me months of work back when I was still making it. It makes me wonder if people will find my own work if I were to invest my time in creating content for the market place.
Anyway I think I’ll probably give it a go this time around, but I hope Epic Games considers doing something about this issue because it negatively affects both buyers and sellers.
Today UE4 Marketplace is considerably larger than when this topic was created; but still just a fraction of the “multi million dollar” market that Unity’s asset store is today. Not to mention usability of Marketplace is still limited to what EpicGames Launcher can offer, which is little, in terms of discoverability.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, we appreciate it. We agree that we need to improve our discovery tools so that buyers can have an easier time finding the various content that’s available to them. Tags and improved search functionality is currently at the top of our list of things we want to improve. I never want to make false promises and I can’t offer a target date, but this is something we want to dramatically improve.
In my case, not many people are buying my music assets on unreal marketplace. instead, i have got several sales/months in other games markets… :-/
That sounds great, looking forward to it .
We’ve been hearing this for years. Still no progress to show though?
I want to see it
With confidence I can say that UE Marketplace outpace assetstore soon.
I’d like to see that happen. Any particular reason why you think so?
Because of quality control.
unreal engine are the best when come to quality control of their asset.
I know I would certainly be interested in buying 3D modeling assets specifically designed to work seamlessly with ARK Survival Evolved’s own animations/bone structure and joints. There are a lot of us folks from the mod’ing community that do not have the knowledge to create these kinds of art assets ourselves and NEED to purchase them from you, talented artists. If only it were easier to find said kinds of assets by searching the marketplace…
Interested? Let me know at
Sincerely,
Any progress? Alternately, what about a store API so people can build their own front ends and integrations?
Seeing people making serious money gave me hope
