Grass Pack Vol. 1 Official Thread

I’m thinking about uploading the grass pack to gumroad in order to update on a more regular basis. I’m not quite sure how yet to handle updates for people who have already purchased the pack quite yet.

Does anyone know of the requirements for paying epic on something like ? Do I still owe 30% to Epic, or is that negated based on where I’m selling from?

The 30% is entirely a Marketplace commitment. If you upload to another location for sale, you deal with their selling requirements (and royalties), not Epic’s.

Hmmm maybe you still owe them the 5% royalty.

Well, either way I’m definitely going to upload future updates to gumroad. I’ll put update 2 up onto gumroad once I finish it. I’ll still be pushing to have updates posted on the unreal marketplace, but if you want them ASAP that’s where you will be able to find them.

I will be posting the gumroad information as soon as I finish update 2 and have it uploaded to my gumroad account.

Hey everyone, I’m sorry that it’s taken so long to get grass pack up onto gumroad. With family troubles, and overbooked freelance it’s taken a lot longer to get you guys content than I would have liked.

I received a message from a wonderful individual that bought my grass pack and made it mobile compatible. He then decided to send a walkthrough of how he did it in so I can provide it to you guys. I would like to publicly thank you! I wanted to avoid calling you out by name in case you wanted to remain anonymous, but if it makes no difference to you feel free to post and take credit.

So what I have currently uploaded to gumroad is the version that was supposed to be sent out quite a while ago. It has LOD’s for the grass meshes, fixed textures (the flickering shadows), and an experimental terrain to practice foliage placement with.

I will be finishing up the next update over the following week. If you buy from gumroad I believe you get an email and can download whenever you want. After you purchase it you will get access to that forever. So what I will do for future updates is I will upload, and then let you guys know a new update is out. Then you should be able to download the updated version from the same email. I’m a noob to gumroad so if any of information is even somewhat inaccurate please feel free to correct me.

One individual messaged me that the grass pack does not work in 4.7. After testing it on my machine it appears to be working fine. If anyone has any issues at all with 4.7 please message me.

Again, I cannot thank all of you enough for your amazing support. I am so excited to get the next update out, and further push the boundaries of how far pack can go. I would also like to note after the next update is out the price will be raised to $19.99. Currently on gumroad I have it listed as $12.99. I feel that with all of the content that will be coming out with the next update including mobile support, and 3 tiers of advanced shaders that a price raise is fair. If I’m wrong in doing so or if you consider the pricing to be unfair please let me know what you would consider to be more fair and why.

how are the people that bought the pack on the marketplace will get those updates?

The best idea I have, which is fairly cumbersome, is that if you have bought my grass pack email me some form of proof of purchase. After you send me that proof of purchase I will send you a download link to the latest update of the grass pack.

If anyone has any better ideas feel free to pitch in, but for now is how I’m going to go about handling these updates. I would also like to reiterate on a post I made a while back. I will still be updating the content on the unreal marketplace. It’s obviously going to take much longer to get there, but it will get there eventually if I have any say in the matter.

No one really knows how long it’ll take for updates to reach the marketplace.

he has a video on gumroad with the creation of grass in debrismaker2 so yea , he didn’t make the mesh but he textured and animated so i guess it’s worth the price

Hey everyone, sorry for not supporting thread as much as I should be. Life has been… difficult the past few months. Now that things are starting to look a little more normal on the home front I’ll be keeping up with the thread and I’ll be starting on the next update.

@danielpeles - The whole process of updating content on the Unreal marketplace has been infuriating to say the least. I’ve been trying to get the latest version onto the marketplace for the past 2 months to no avail. Every time I try to update I have to submit a ticket for updating the content. Then someone gets ahold of me (maybe 50% of the time), I tell them what I want to update, they say alright, and then it doesn’t get updated. Then I have to resubmit a ticket in order to get in contact with someone again and the same thing happens. It really sucks for everyone involved.

@3dfxpro – Nice eye! I did use debris maker as a base for my grass. It doesn’t work out of the box well at all, but with a lot of modifications it makes a solid start for some good grass. You can also use Zbrush’s fiber mesh system to create nice looking grass as well. I have a few friends who swear by it.

In the future I will be running all content I create through a rigorous testing system. I’ll be passing it through my coworkers, artist friends, and gamer friends to make sure it looks and performs well from a next gen, artistic, and current gen perspective. Then if it passes through that phase I’ll upload to gumroad as a sort of beta test. Anyone who buys my content in the future off of gumroad, I would like to ask you all to give me detailed feedback on the content you received through email. If that turns out well, and all updates on that front are complete I will then upload the content onto the unreal marketplace. is a good system to go by to make sure the content I create is top of the line, but it is also there to avoid needing to create additional updates for the unreal marketplace.

Now I would like to briefly discuss what I’ll be doing next for the grass pack. The next thing I’ll be doing is exploring the possibility of creating dynamic responsive grass that moves and reacts to player movement and intersecting geometry. I’ll be beginning my research and development week.

I have happen as well, can you elaborate on what has to be done to a texture to fix ? Thanks.

That particular appears when the texture settings are set to not use mip maps. Simply applying the texture mip settings to anything else will fix the problem (I prefer sharpen 10).

Thanks a ton good to know. I guess I am experiencing and entirely different. Due to having a dynamic directional light (night and day cycle) the grass shadows are so low res that it causes swimming and flickering shadows. Disabling shadows fixes the, but doesn’t look as nice. Also If the light is static the does not occur. So a movable directional light that is moving realtime causes it. Obviously is not an with your grass, more of an engine.

There is a set of settings in the light properties that might help remedy the you’re having as well. It’s called cascaded shadow maps. Messing with some of those settings helped reduce the problem a lot for me.
