Epic Launcher: Use Default Browser for Web Links

For me, the issue has been solved by settings the value of ProgId in following key to what you would like to set.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\http(s)\UserChoice

*you can see correct value by looking at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\http(s)\UserChoiceLatest\ProgIdkey’s value, as long as you set your favorite browser as default on Windows

My PC Environments

  • Windows 11 Pro
    • Version: 24H2
    • OS Build: 26100.5074\
  • Browser
    • Vivaldi
      • 7.5.3735.66 (Stable channel) (64-bit)

Hope this helps.

This is the fix that worked for me. Sothanks for that!

Thanks, this is the fix that works

Thank you. This one solved it for me.

I made the mistake of also changing the hash, so after it restarted it reset the default browser to Edge, but then accepted the default browser change via Windows Settings (which it wasn’t doing before).

Works, thank you!

Just came across this and opened a PR to look in the new user choice location first:

https://github.com/EpicGames/UnrealEngine/pull/14405

Same, literally did this and then uninstalled Epic launcher. It seems petty, but it’s the simplest thing to fix

Hey Guys!! I found A solution for he Microsoft Egde, Jusy goto C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Microsft and delete the Edge folder, you may need administrator permission or have to take onership of the folder.

i worked for me.

this worked

The simple solution. No fussing with registries that could cause problems down the road.

I just had this same problem and went in and renamed the edge folder and now it is working as expected! Thanks!!

Having the same issue. It was surprising and troublesome to copy paste opened links to my default browser (Firefox, Win 11). Please fix it.

Still happening.

And all of the complicated solutions described above should not be necessary.

The Launcher (and any other app) should respect the user’s default settings. The user may have reasons beyond preference, such as privacy and accessibility.

Worked! took me a second to get it done but worked. Thank you

I use Firefox as well, I followed all of your instruction, restarted epic games launcher (closed it from system tray and reopened it) but it still opens links in Edge instead of my default browser Firefox. Notably my ProgId was the exact same as yours FirefoxURL-308046B0AF4A39CB and it also showed up “Restricted”

After some more troubleshooting, I finally figured it out and got it working. I think eariler I had run the . .\SFTA.ps1 incorrectly.

just to be registered i just wasted 45 min of my life fixing a MSEdge redirect problem that some software engineer could have fixed a long long time ago.
WinXP era redirect problems are not fix and the still think they have a chance against steam…
