Drunk On Nectar - A Nature Sandbox Game

your plant growth interests me, I am wanting to do this but since I have only really just started using UE4 I struggle to understand what you have done. Would you be able to show me the blueprints or what you used to generate/simulate growth of plants? I’m wanting to use this in my thesis research so won’t be making money off this haha. Thanks in advance

Finally, the Spider AI video is here! It uses a new custom navigation system I wrote for pathfinding on foliage and past 90 degrees.

I’m now working on main menus, UI, SFX and BGM. It’s nice to take a break from coding

@todeshund I’m sorry I didn’t see your post until now! The forum mail notification system appears to be totally broken these days, or at least it doesn’t work for me. Perhaps tagging users is in the only way of making sure someone is notified now.

Anyway, the system is written in C++ so apart from the screenshots I’ve posted in previous posts there isn’t a quick way of showing the entire thing. However the visual part is very simple, you should be able to do it in Blueprints easily. Here’s the high-level process: I divide a plant into individual flora elements (shoot, leaf, flower bud, seed pod, etc) and just use morph targets for animating a flora from its germinated state to its state of maturity. I hold everything together by keeping track of what their relative transforms should be and whether one flora is taking a ride on another (eg: a leaf rides the shoot until a certain growth stage is reached). On top of this I use a custom event scheduler for managing lifecycle events (eg: blooming of flowers, popping of seeds from seed pods, growth of new shoots from existing shoots, etc).

In previous posts I’ve gone into deeper detail on this with some screenshots, let me know if there’s any further questions you have.

Another post after a very long absence! Here’s a pretty Dragonfly to make up for it!

Rock, Paper, Shotgun covers DoN!

Read their article about my game below:
http://rockpapershotgun.com/2016/04/25/drunk-on-nectar-spiders/

This was back in April when I posted an article of my own on DoN’s IndieDB page which they seem to have found. Anyway, I never updated this thread since then so I thought I’d share it with you now!

Release Build - Almost there!
In the past two months alone the game has progressed faster than ever, to the extent that a fully playable release build is now almost ready!

First things first - I need to submit DoN to Steam Greenlight so I’m preparing content for that. I’ve intentionally delayed the Greenlight submission so many times now but I just want to give the game the best possible chance to shine and do well. My social media presence is feeble so I’m relying on the game’s unique content to make up for that and hopefully get through.

The first build will obviously be limited in scope and size but with support from the gaming community and nature lovers I hope to gradually build the game to its full potential.

Here are some pics for your trouble!

Simulation Mode gets UI overhaul. (Big thanks to UMG-C++ combo for helping me build some pretty complex UI)

If you’re interested check out this IndieDB article where I’ve gone into a lot more detail about release plans and the road ahead.

Latest round of news! Drunk On Nectar released on Steam as Early Access a few months ago! It’s been an exciting journey so far.

Recently DoN became perhaps the first game ever to successfully depict a complete animal lifecycle:
From egg to larva to pupa and beyond, in full 3D at an unprecedented 1mm accuracy! (DoN uses a magnified game world).

See it in action below!

A new 2017 trailer was also released for DoN only yesterday, do check it out :)

As the game has now released (EA), I'll probably be making a new thread in the released projects section for future updates.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this thread for providing your feedback over the past two years since this thread was made

I hope to see all your games come out and succeed too.

With

Congrats on release VSZ! =)

Thanks ! You’ve provided much encouragement throughout the tenure of this thread, it is deeply appreciated! Best of luck to you on your marketplace assets too, hope to see more great Sci-Fi content from you

Don’t mention it! I’m glad to see you’ve brought this project to completion, I’ve always found the premise to be intriguing. Hopefully I’ll have some free time around Q4 to give it a try. And thanks, plenty more is on the way! =)
