“Characters generated in MetaHuman Creator, including those in the sample project, are licensed for use in Unreal Engine projects. This means that you must render MetaHumans with Unreal Engine; you cannot render them outside of Unreal Engine.”
We’d like to get more clarity on above direction on ‘rendering outside vs inside’ of Unreal Engine(UE). Say, we plan to create a 3D environment in a UE5 Project and use a Metahuman Character in it. Afterwards, if we export entire UE Project in a GLTF and use it in a webpage will it fall in ‘outside’ category? And what if build the same Unreal Engine project for Android, and after the build is done we use the app in Android then in which category will it fall - inside or outside?
There has been a lot of discussion already about different legal aspects of MetaHuman Creator. I am also very interested in the answer to this question. I am not a lawyer; but, I think it boils down to will you be making money with this, and will you be making a lot of money with this. For more on this and related discussions, see also the Virtual Beings Facebook group.
My expectation is that this counts as “outside Unreal Engine,” yes.
This particular interpretation is not “will you make a lot of money,” but instead “will Epic be able to control the low-level presentation/shading of metahumans to be to their specifications?”
GLTF is not an Unreal Engine renderer, and is not controlled by Epic, hence you can’t use Metahumans there.
Can you please throw some light on the other aspect of the question i.e. building UE project with Metahuman Character for Android app. OR for that matter, building an iOS/Windows app. Will it also be considered ‘outside’ unreal engine? If yes, then how to create an app for Android/Windows/iOS from UE with Metahuman Character?
An Android, iOS, or Windows app that is built using Unreal Engine is a legitimate host for Metahumans, as far as I can tell. EPIC doesn’t much care whether the app “seems like a game” but they do care about adhering to the licensing agreement, e g, you can’t sub-license the app to others, you must pay them royalties once your revenue exceeds a certain threshold, and so on.
