Autodesk acquires Bitsquid to create their own game engine

It has to bee free for them to compete with what is already out there. Why would anyone switch?

Haha, that is never going to happen; Wait, we used to say the same about Unreal… Who knows

I was thinking the same thing about Epic releasing some 3d modeling software are work with Blender and integrate it into UE 4 somehow. I actually had the audacity to think that would be the big news today. With Autodesk promoting its own game engine how long will maya and 3d max be friendly with the other game engines.

That’s Autodesk in a nutshell. I find it really sad that they put the ā€œWe <3 indiesā€ in their Maya LT video. It’s so transparent it’s sad really, they don’t give a single **** about the smaller people and know that people are going to continue their bug-ridden junk softwares until the end of time, since they pretty much have monopoly. There are big bugs in 3ds that have been there since at least 2008, that are still there today, that if anything proves how little they care. With every release the majority of plugins and scripts die, no forward thinking at all. That said, I prefer 3ds to all other modeling packages, but that doesn’t mean I like it.

Also, I don’t think Epic should make a 3D modeler, the time and energy it would take for that to be usable and even come close to the power of the current industry standard packages would just not be worth it. There are too many features that are needed before something like that could even be usable at all. It’s better that they focus on UE.

Where I see this landing up is a walk around tool. 3ds Max has one but it is terrible even for doing simple vis work.

Besides Autodesk really needs something as a new key feature and not just something that looks like a bug fix or feature enhancement

What’s the problem with Modo for UE4? Animation is there, but sure, with UE supporting Maya with ART I’d rather use Maya for UE animation. Just checking if that’s all your concerns with it, cause I’d like to know before I run into any problems myself there. And I highly agree, definitely not a downgrade from Maya otherwise haha.

Anyway, I have a few buddies at FatShark (BitSquid). They seemed to love it there and spoke highly of their tools a while back. I really can’t see how AD would be able to compete with Epic though (judging from all that AD is and what they have been making). If FatShark keeps developing it then maybe. But if it’s even on par with UE - I will eat a couple of furry hats if so - I just don’t trust AD for the long run.

Oh well.

Helldivers is kind of cool though, played it til 4 am last night.

@
well put

I think EPIC should probably just support Blender 3D a bit more, I am not sure how do they do it, do they help create stuff like UI changes and plugins etc? or do they just donate money to the Blender foundation?

I have read that EPIC was supporting blender in the past.

Do you really think Autodesk would kill Max & Maya over a game engine?

Doubt Autodesk will ever care about indie scene. They make too much money in Movies and Autocad to care about anything else

I don’t think that Autodesk is that bad at least on all fronts. Maya LT is really nice for indies and the annual price is not bad either. There is a difference between a hobbyist and indie.

Nobody said products are so bad, we said prices are bad. There is no hobbyist packages from Autodesk regarding prices, and indie prices are already high. Maya LT in Europe is 1000 euro, and Maya 4000 euro. That’s one of the reason all indies use Blender. You see, for Autodesk, it does not matter if you want to learn or your income is under 10k per year or 100k, they want same big flat price from everybody upfront.

Well, pricing for Substance products, Modo, Mari, Adobe products are pretty nice and they are for indies and professionals

I was talking about price too. Maya LT is annually around the same as UE4 was with its subscription before going free (250eur per year for me, vat excluded).

Adobe Photoshop with Illustrator is around the same as Maya LT. I think the Substance Indie pack was roughly half of the price when I upgraded during discount.

But still there is a difference between a hobbyists and indies (but this thread is wrong place to debate on that) and when it comes to available versions (target audience) and pricing. I agree that Autodesk ignores hobbyist in most products but so do many other companies too

Adobe Creative Cloud $49.99 http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Creative-Cloud-Digital-Membership/dp/B00CS74YQO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425899661&sr=8-1&keywords=adobe+cc

Adobe Creative Cloud = Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC, Adobe InDesign CC, Adobe Dreamweaver CC, Adobe After Effects CC, Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Adobe Muse CC, Adobe Edge Tools & Services, Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, Adobe Audition CC, Bridge CC, Encore, Fireworks, Flash Builder Premium, Flash Professional CC, InCopy CC, Lightroom, Media Encoder CC, Prelude CC, and SpeedGrade CC.

See? Alot of software to use for ONLY $49.99 a month.

And heck, why would i use Maya LT when there is a better modeling tool.(Blender, Modo…)
Remember, Maya LT have polycount limit!

I feel I should point out that it is highly unlikely you were speaking to the CEO of the company, who would be in a position to change Autodesk’s policy. You just swore at someone who operates the phones, who couldn’t help you, and was just doing her job telling you how the company operated.

I don’t know why you bring that even to comparison? Apples and oranges, totally different tools and totally different price. Full Adobe Cloud is 2-5x more per year vs Maya LT depending of country and if you are an hobbyist/individual (750eur) or indie/business (840 eur, no vat). Seems this boils down to same hobbyist/indie difference over and over again.

BTW there is no polygon limit with the upcoming send to Unreal/Unity feature.

Totally agree with that. I also think CEO is used with big numbers and don’t give a **** about indies or hobbits. Remember Autodesk sell licenses to big company’s in different industry’s, where money are not always a problem, so that indie/hobbits problem can make CEO smile and move on, nothing more. Meanwhile, everybody is using Blender or other cheap tools, or just pirate their software.

^^

Yes, it was a reply to earlier comment. However the whole cloud set comparison is out of scope (IMO) with the price and over half of the tools not being for game development so it would be waste of money. You could get 2-5 different tool subscriptions with that price. You did not comment the price back in anyway which was your main point.

I still think Maya LT features and price is very very indie friendly which was the original thing I wanted to comment when it turned into Autodesk hating indies

As they do with most of the stuff they buy. Buy the competition then you don’t need to compete.
