About Adventure Roll

Adventure Roll is the only fully immersive 3D virtual tabletop (VTT) for D&D 5e. Adventure Roll combines the functionality of a VTT with the visuals of a AA video game to deliver the D&D experience you’ve been waiting for.

Dungeon masters can customize maps, place interactive traps, props, puzzles, and animated NPCs to set up homebrewed adventures within minutes. They can control the action from any angle, keep adventure notes, utilize a suite of tools via our integrated user interface, and even play alongside their players in 1st or 3rd person. The platform comes with embedded 5th edition rules, game mechanics, and automated dice roll calculations with character sheet updates to make game administration easy. Players can explore the world through the eyes of personalized, animated avatars that they can control in 1st or 3rd person. They can interact with objects, launch lifelike attacks against enemies, fall into traps, take damage, cast spells with particle effects, climb walls, swim, loot, role play with emotes, and more.

Adventure Roll launched into Early Access in October 2021 and is available as free download through our website. To kick things off, new-comers will enjoy a free, fully set-dressed hideout dungeon map, inspired by the Redbrand Hideout, that comes complete with multiple NPCs as well as over two dozen props and interactable objects.

Our Party

As avid D&D players, developers, artists, and a business guy, we set out on a quest to get more out of our D&D games. We wanted to play a 3.5 foot dwarf and feel what it would be like to square off against an 8-foot Ogre or to launch a fireball and see it explode amongst a horde of kobolds.

Our Adventure

We set out on an Adventure to create the best digital D&D gaming experience we could. We wanted it to be immersive, visually rich, flexible, and easy to use. Like any good Adventure, ours took many twists and turns. We encountered many interesting characters and asked a lot of questions. We hit some dead-ends and went down some long and winding roads. Eventually we found treasure when we needed it most and as a group, became closer along the way.

We’re very proud to announce that Adventure Roll is in Early Access. Adventure Roll combines the visual richness of a AA video game with the game mechanics and flexibility of a virtual table top system. We let Dungeon Masters create customizable maps, provide a full suite of interactable structures, and a cadre of props to set up their adventures. Adventure Roll includes embedded 5th edition rules administration and a turn based combat system, complete with targeting, visual effects and animations so GMs can focus on story-telling rather than technology or calculations.

Players can explore any level using fully animated, personalized characters and interact with purposefully placed objects that further their quest.

There’s much to do and our Adventure is just beginning. We invite you to join us!

What’s in new in Version 0.5.2

Hassle-Free Adventure Management

Adventure management has been streamlined and simplified. Now, when you start a campaign, you can add maps and jump right in within seconds, along with inviting friends in moments with just an invite link. You can even have sub-adventures, allowing you to string a number of one shots into a full campaign.

New Regional Note System

GMs have a new encounter region system to display relevant information about the location they are focusing on. As you move from region to region, your notes are automatically updated to display editable descriptions and key props placed in these areas. A top-down camera view allows for full control as GMs are able to gain a bird’s eye view of everything going on, even zooming out to give a full lay of the land in the interactive maps.

Improved Game Master Controls

As a GM, you now have options on how to run and view your games. There is the traditional D&D experience of running a top down campaign, or you can jump into an immersive view and see your campaign world from the player’s perspective. Each region has camera views to point toward the action, allowing you to easily switch in and out of an immersive view back to top down with just the click of a button. In both perspectives, objects of importance have indicators so you know what your players can and will interact with. You can even “possess” an NPC and take control of them walking around the map alongside your players!

New NPCs Available

9 new SRD monsters have been added for purchase via the in-game shop.

  • Bandit
  • Bandit Captain
  • Cult Fanatic
  • Cultist
  • Drow
  • Female Noble
  • Male Noble
  • Orc
  • Thug

Reactions and 2nd Level Spell Expansions

The number of spells available for play has increased to include the majority of second level spells on top of the cantrips and first level spells already available. Each one includes accurate dice rolls, damage types and saving throws to speed up your gameplay. When a reaction is possible, players now have all their viable options displayed immediately to them.

This latest update makes organizing, inviting friends and playing your campaigns more intuitive than ever before. Signup and start your adventure today!

Greetings @Justin.Dooley, and thank you for sharing your unique creation, “Adventure Roll,” here in the Unreal Engine Forums! The production value of your official trailer was outstanding; everything about it was phenomenal. You and your team are genuinely pioneering how D&D can be experienced, and you have my full support. How long have you and your team been working on this project? What are your goals for Adventure Roll heading into 2022? Also, Happy New Year! :tada:

Thanks so much. We are a small team. Only 7 people. Initial development started back in 2017 with only 3 people. We have tried a lot of different things and are starting down a good path.

As we ring in the new year, we are starting to plan out our dungeon builder and map generator tools. The goals for them is to assist in the fast creation of customizable maps. We talk to our users constantly and this is the number one thing being requested. So, that’s naturally going to be our focus!

What’s in new in Version 0.5.3

Adventure Roll’s 0.5.3 update includes more content developed to expand your games to new places. It includes a new level, new props, new character customization and a few new features that have been requested.

Visit the Academy Ruins

This abandoned academy is nestled within the rocky mountain cliffs. Stained glass lies shattered in piles. The massive statues of the school’s patrons loom over the unused study areas. What magical secrets lie within?

With the addition of the academy ruins includes a selection of additional props available for use in all of your levels. These include:

  • Bookcases with and without books
  • Interactive Candelabras
  • Interactive Chandeliers
  • Interactive Candles
  • Potion bottles of various colors and shapes
  • Mounted Wall Torches
  • A Stone Tower
  • A brazier that emits colored flames and light
  • Magical colored pulsing orbs of light
  • An interactive adjustable magical bridge
  • Long and short benches
  • Stone statues
  • Wall Candles

Four new enemies are being added for use within adventure each will their own animations and abilities

Ettin

You’ll likely hear it bickering with itself before you see it. This two headed giant is strong, tough and hard to sneak up on.

Battling an Ettin is a difficult task for fledgling adventures. Rookies may try to sneak up on on one while it sleeps only to find out that two heads means you are your own sentry.

Specter

You can’t have an abandoned school without a tortured soul or two. The specter fits the bill perfectly.

Challenge your players by giving them something that can move without the confines of a physical body. Pass through walls, soar through the air and shrug off normal attacks.

A specter is the perfect low level challenge to mix up your fights with a bit of environmental diversity.

Grimlock

These savage creatures are so used to living in the dark, they have gone blind. Black voids fill the areas where their eyes should be.

Being blind won’t stop them though. Their keen sense of smell and hearing allows them to perceive their surroundings out to 30 feet.

They are known to hide in groups among rocks and ambush travelers as they go by.

Lesser Flame Skull

A custom take on a classic monster. The lesser flame skull is what you get when an apprentice or student ventures down a darker path. Not as powerful as their more knowledgeable counterparts, a lesser flame skull can still do some real damage.

If you are looking to introduce this monster to the group without accidentally blowing them all up. This is the creature for you.

More Hairstyles

You’ve asked for more hair options so we added more hair options. This patch includes 13 new hair styles available for purchase in the Dragon’s Lair shop. These include:

  • Side Parted Long Bangs

  • Side Part Long

  • Slicked Mohawk

  • Basic Long

  • Topknot

  • Long Bun

  • Short Blown

  • Medium Bun

  • Large Bun

  • Long Ponytail

  • Large Braid

  • Bob Bun

  • Balding

New Features

PING!

As a GM you can now ping locations you want players to focus on with the middle mouse button. Doing so will spawn a particle effect that all your players can see.

Whisper Chat

You can now send secret messages to each other in game via the chat box. Next to the chat input choose the intended receiver of the message and only they will be able to see it.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug with the change history when editing a map which would not let you exit a map when you chose to save and exit.

Hey @Justin.Dooley,

Hope you’re having an amazing day! :heartpulse:

I absolutely adore the background you’ve given on your enemies, the stunning environments, and the fun character customization options you’ve made available. The experience you’re developing will be deeply immersive and just thoroughly enjoyable from a DM perspective.

Will we be getting a new gameplay trailer anytime soon? So excited to see more!

Thank you so much for sharing your project and letting us watch as it develops. Sending lots of support to you and your team.

Thanks so much. The trailer above was actually all filmed in game. only a few console commands to hide UI and such. I would not expect a full on gameplay trailer any time soon. Good trailers are fairly expensive to produce. We will be doing some promo stuff (Videos Included) for some of the tools we are building as well as some instructional videos.

We tend to updates every 6-8 weeks with some hotfixes mixed in there.

Hey again @Justin.Dooley,

So excited for this update! Hope you’ve been well.

Watching this video made me want to play around with it and create my own dungeon for no reason other than just to decorate. I love how it’s so customizable and polished. I do have a few questions for you, do you have plans to add toggleable plant life? And do you have plans to make circular shaped rooms?

Looking forward to seeing your project grow! :heartpulse:

We are adding a lot more elements. I think roots and vines are on the docket for sure. We have requests for circular rooms. They are just a bit trickier due to being on a square grid. We will figure it out eventually though.

There is still a lot to be added in but we are making progress!
