Beginner seeking advice: best way to create a first-person walkthrough video of an art installation in Unreal Engine?
Hi everyone,
I’m a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence (New Technologies of Art course), and I’m currently working on an interactive art installation for my final exam project. It’s called “How’s Life Going?” — a conceptual walkthrough representing the three stages of life (birth, life, death) through light, sound, and space inside a corridor-like environment.
Each section of the path has a specific atmosphere:
- A white, womb-like corridor with ambient, muffled sounds.
- A colorful, emotionally dynamic section with evolving, metallic tones.
- A final dim corridor leading to a pitch-black, silent room.
I want to create a 30-60 second video that shows this journey from a first-person perspective, with lights that activate as the viewer progresses and turn off behind them, and soundscapes that evolve naturally.
I’m a complete beginner in Unreal Engine, so I’m trying to figure out the best approach. Should I:
- Build the path like a playable first-person experience and just record the screen while moving through it?
- Or should I build it as a fully controlled cinematic using Unreal’s Sequencer and animate everything that way?
My goal is not to make a playable experience — just a compelling and atmospheric video.
If you have any advice, beginner-friendly tutorials, templates, or workflows to recommend, I would be super grateful. Thank you in advance for your help!
