4.26.1 random GPU Crashed or D3D Device Removed error

I had trouble every 15 minutes all weekend, non-stop bug reports and crashes. Then I realized: The crashes happened after installing NVidia’s driver 471.11-desktop-win10-64bit, but Unreal was stable with the driver supplied by Microsoft and Windows 10, which is versioned 9/30/2020 27.21.14.5671. This is stable so far.

Also, to get a crash, I don’t have to do all that much. Sometimes the crash triggers just by clicking on File or Edit menu then running the mouse back and forth along the menu bar, which probably accesses the Windows SDK and DirectX render calls, it will crash out. The crash always takes time to occur, like 10 to 15 minutes.

With the 471.11 driver and crashes, I also tested disabling the TDR (Testing and debugging TDR during driver development - Windows drivers | Microsoft Learn) by setting TDRLevel to 0. (This is a development/test level setting and not good for production run-time use.) What happens then is Unreal no longer crashes, but you see repeated “black screen” resets to the graphics card. Keep in mind the card and system are never under load when these resets are occurring.

My system is ASUS RAMPAGE V, Intel Core i7-6950X @3.00GHz 10 Cores/20 Logical processors, 64GB DDR4 3200 RAM, HAL is 10.0.19041.1081 Microsoft Windows Pro 10.0.19043 x64.

GPU is NVidia (Reference) 2080 Ti with 12GB VRAM. I also have an ASUS 2080Ti brand new that I can try to see if there’s a difference between the two manufacturers but same architecture.
