3DS Max bone geometry and skinning question

Is the bone geometry used to determine weighing of the skin to the character? As an example, lets say I select the upper arm bone; do I need to change the depth and with the match the characters arm volume, or can I get away with having the width and depth set to 1.0?

Thanks.

The bone is used to do a automatic envelope size yeah. So that will directly influence the auto generated envelopes. You will still get auto skin even if the bone is that thin, but you end up with basically no blending between limbs. Personally I never rely on auto generated envelopes, and in that case the size makes no difference, but if you want to use that, then yeah, the bone size matters.
