Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is the only extant gymnosperm in the Ginkgophyta phylum, known as the "living fossil" of the plant world. Its evolutionary history dates back to approximately 270 million years ago, during the Permian period. During the Mesozoic Era, when dinosaurs thrived (including the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods), it was once a "dominant tree species" widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.
