Quercus robur—commonly known as the English oak—is a long-lived deciduous tree in the Fagaceae family, native to most of Europe and western Asia. It typically grows up to 40 m (130 ft) tall, with a stout trunk that can exceed 11 m (36 ft) in girth. The bark is greyish-brown, closely grooved with vertical plates, offering rich sculptural detail for photorealistic texturing.
The leaves are alternately arranged, broadly oblong to ovate (10–12 cm long by 7–8 cm wide), with a short 2–3 mm petiole and 3–6 rounded lobes arising from a cordate (auricled) base. Foliage is dark green above and paler beneath, transitioning to reddish-brown hues in autumn. In spring, slender yellow-green catkins appear (2–4 cm long), soon followed by clusters of 2–2.5 cm acorns on 4–8 cm peduncles. Ecologically, English oak supports at least 400 species of insect herbivores—the highest biodiversity of any British plant—and is recognized as a top contributor to forest food webs.
Leaves lack bristle-tips, characteristic of white oaks
