Windows Packaging Errors In 5.2.1

Hi,

Super new to using Unreal Engine and just trying to use for some modding to start with. I have had success with packaging a project in UE 5.3, however the game I’m trying to mod for uses 5.2.1. When I try to package for Windows I get a lot of LogShaderCompiler errors. Log below. I’ve tried SDK 10.0.22621.2428 and 10.0.19041.0 and have got dotnetsdk 3.1.115 installed.

Any ideas on what is causing the failure? I’m testing with a standard new blank project so nothing weird in the project itself as far as I know, and the same process in 5.3 works ok.

Hey there! It’s hard to pinpoint a single cause here, but looking at the log and the fact that you tried different SDK versions without success suggests that the problem isn’t necessarily with the Windows SDK setup. The log mentions some queued shader have failed. The errors specifically mention FNiagaraRibbonCreateIndexBufferParamsCS and FInstanceCull_CS , which are related to Niagara and Nanite.
Maybe check the Niagara particle effects in your projects if there are any compile errors in them that you might have overlooked?
Does the game you are modding have it’s own dedicated community where you can search if somebody had similar issues?

Thanks for the response GreenTea. There are multiple shader errors, not just FNiagara, which makes me think that it is failing to compile every shader. If I do a “recompile shaders all” command from the console it will also crash UE 5.2.1 with a “Crash inside the platform compiler!” error.

This project I am testing with has nothing in it that I have put in myself - it is just a pure blank project for now for ease of testing / diagnosis.

The Game.log file shows this right before it crashes. Is the “exceeded budget of 2.000000s” significant?

Ah, interesting. The Stall detector exceeding a budget of 2 seconds suggests that the shader compilation process is taking longer than it should. The Crash inside the platform compiler! message also indicates an internal failure. So, there could be a couple of reasons for this…

You should definitely verify if you need to update your graphics drivers (perhaps try a clean install). Also, ensure that the DirectX Shader Compiler (DXC) is correctly installed and configured (it should be from the get-go, but who knows, maybe something on your system messed with it?).

You could try increasing the shader compilation timeout in the engine settings. This might allow more time for the shaders to compile without triggering a crash, although it’s more of a workaround than a solution to the underlying problem…

Maybe try these things and let us know how it goes!

Hi - again thanks for the advice GreenTea. I believe I have now identified the root cause as being my i9-13900k being overclocked by my motherboard. Restoring the settings down to “enforce all limits” on the CPU has solved the problem and I can now package / cook without issue in 5.2.1

This CPU instability seems to be getting more press recently with running games in UE5 as well - and it looks like some motherboard bioses are getting firmware updates to help fix as well. It was a frustrating time to identify this so posting in the hope it helps anyone else.
