Ive been, for awhile now attempting to use the broken fbx rig that you get when exporting the skeleton from UE4, but because the bones are not actual bones in 3DS Max, but instead are helpers you cant use them correctly, and is a massive pain to animate with. So Im wondering, why hasn’t epic released an official source file for the rig?

I believe this is because Epic doesn’t use Max internally (at least not for animation), and then there isn’t really a single standard for it (do you want vanilla bones, biped, cat?). Also, there are some good community rigs out there which should satisfy this need:
