Why does painting with foliage type cause my animated vertex paint to jitter?

So I’ve been working on adding an animated leaf texture to my low poly tree meshes and got everything set up in the editor, propagated my vertex paint to the source mesh, and began painting with it. Then I noticed my animation was really jittery even though I had no such issues with the static mesh I dragged into the foliage palette. It gets much worse the more foliage instances I add, but I can copy/paste hundreds of instances of the same mesh as a static with no issue, so it seems to me there’s something about the way the foliage painter is set up that clashes with the way I put my material together. Has anyone else run into this before or know of some kind of workaround? I don’t even really know what to search for in google.
