Whats the best way to populate large terrains with vast amount of foliage?

Big and medium sized trees works very well with the foliage tool. For small but numerous things like grass and other vegetation, your best bet is to roll your own procedural foliage system. High amount of mesh painting with foliage tool becomes very problematic

Making a runtime procedural foliage system is rather easy, there are blueprint examples of it, you can modify those or go for a C++ approach. In either case, you’ll need some programming experience though.

Is there any examples of this that we can read about? I am having quite some issues with things like too much foliage myself.
