I’m about to dive headfirst into learning Unreal Engine design. I’ve carefully chosen a PC and now I’m looking at purchasing a monitor (I can only afford one at this time). That being said, I’m wondering what’s more important: color accuracy or refresh rate. I’m considering the BenQ PD2700U, but should I be looking at a gaming monitor instead?
Assuming you are interested in making games get a common gaming monitor imho.
Not sure its worth paying extra for some extremely accurate color niche monitor (if that is a thing) … most people won’t see it anyway when they view your work on standard gaming monitors.
Find someone with a color-correction spider (or other tool) https://spyderx.datacolor.com/
who can get your colors as accurate as possible. that way you know your content will look good on any tv and monitor. while IPS might not always be needed, after that at least 60Hz and up is def nice to have.
an HDR monitor with high Herz and IPS would be the shiznit, but frankly, I get by with three cheap color-calibrated 2ms 60hz 4k monitors. (mainly because in windows non-hdr and hdr monitors do not play nicely) If I really wanna test things I’ll hook up my color-calibrated TV to get a better idea of what gamers might experience.
If you are just getting started though, dont worry too much about it, you can always sell (or give away) your lesser monitor, or hook up multiple monitors.
Ensure it’s capable of BPC 10 (10 bit depth of color, Bits Per Component) for HDR if you get HDR. 32-bit minimum desktop color depth. Refresh Rate of 120 Hz or better is probably best too.
