What is the workaround for missing displacement on skeletal meshes?

What is the workaround for missing displacement on skeletal meshes?

I want to create a character with havy deep scars for a film sequence.
I have the scars as a displacement map. It seems such a waste of video memory to use the full detailed Mesh as the skeletal mesh. Is there anything other than that I can do? Just normal maps does not cut it for me.
Will displacement come back at some point?
