What is the best way to create a MULTIPLAYER game without spending too much money?

I’m actually creating a multiplayer RTS game (a bit similar to Warcraft, with sessions limited to 12 players), and I don’t know the best way to setup a working multiplayer system without spending too much money.

My first idea was to let people host a session, and the clients can simply join the session. But the host need to setup a lot of different things, like port forwarding, firewall disabling, … and for me it is still not working.

My last idea was to pay for a server every month, but then I don’t know how to setup anything.

I’m looking for people who have some experience in this sorts of things, and who can maybe help me. :slight_smile:
