What can we expect to achieve as total newbies?

Hello,

so me and my friends had some good ideas for improvements of a game, but we were sure that we never would see them in there. So I came up with the idea to try to make a game of ourselves, since UE4 has some really great tools and possebilities. But lets be honest, we are newbies. We haven’t made a game before and we have no idea how hard and complex it will be (and I’m pretty sure its hell of a job) in the end. We are sure that we have to spend a lot of months to actually achieve something that can be called a game. And I am also sure that UE4 wasn’t made for total newbies, but for artists, programmers, designers etc. who have experience and maybe work in the branche.

Yesterday we played some H1Z1 (some survival game; it’s not the acutal game we had improvements for) and I wondered how much time it would take with people (with no experience) to make a game like that. We really want to make the game, but I have concerns that this is just a big waste of time. If companies even need 1-2 years we professional employees, how we are even supposed to make a game, even if its not an AAA+ game and more a B like game.

I really looking forward to your opinions and point of view.

It will take pretty much time to create something like that without any game dev experience (dont know an exact amount of time, but I guess 4-5 years :p), because you will have to learn everything from scratch -> 3d program, programming, texturing,…
So it’s better when you start with a small project -> best way to learn the engine. After that start with the actual game + build up a team

Thanks for the answer. Thats what I expected, pretty long time ^^.

We obviously would split up the tasks, so everyone doesn’t have to learn everything. But is it absolutley necessary to learn everything from scratch, when we have UE4 (of course UE4 doesn’t cover 3D Modelling and Texturing)?

No, you can also concentrate onto one aspect -> e.g one creates the meshes/animations (3d program + photoshop/gimp), another one is the programmer (C++ + blueprints), …

Thanks franktech. I am collecting opinions like yours to discuss it later with my friends. If we start doing this project, I want them to know what kind of commitment it is. Some friends (including me) have some advanced experience with web programming languages like PHP, JavaScript and also C#. Maybe it helps us understanding the programming part of UE4.
