weird culling issue for hism

I created a blank new project using UE 4.24.3 and spawned some foliage as HISM. After setting the distance culling to 2000 i got no culling at all which I fixed by activating Dithered LODs in the meshes material settings. After doing so the grass starts to cull in the expected distance, but also it is disappearing right in front of the camera.
To clarify the issue i did some further testing:
Removing the material of the mesh did nothing, the issue persists.
Removing all LODs from the mesh did nothing, issue persists.
Replacing the grass mesh with the standard 1m_cube mesh -> issue does not occur, normal distance culling
As I have no clue what´s happening here could anyone give me a hint wth is causing this issue?
