so if im to import say an ak 47 into ue4, should be rigged and imported as a skeletal mesh?

It all depends on how your weapons are set up to work. In your game, are the other weapons skeletal meshes?

Assuming you are using the default Shooter Project, then yes, it will need to be a Skeletal Mesh.

The best way to answer questions like this for yourself is to just look at existing weapons and duplicate how they’re built.
