Hello! This is my first time posting here. I’m working on a project that’s due in a week and VRPreview has suddenly stopped working, causing me to be unable to test what I’m implementing! I’ve had struggles with it before, but that was due to the improper software/settings being used- now, VRPreview has just suddenly and violently given up on me.
VRPreview had been working fine until recently. Now, when I launch VRPreview, it pops up that white screen that it does while it waits for you to put on the headset, but upon putting it on and looking around, I am either infinitely loading, or stuck in the SteamVR space with the “Next Up” box displaying for about 10 seconds, after which the whole headset will freeze, and either start doing the seizure lighting, or do that thing where when you turn your head, it no longer tracks the movement. On the computer, the VRPreview screen is stuck on white, and is unresponsive. The entire computer will sometimes freeze for almost 30 seconds sometimes, the mouse being unmovable until it unfreezes. When it does, I can’t tab out of VRPreview, or interact with the engine at all, and each time I am forced to use task manager to shut down the project.
Task manager shows that UE is using a large amount of memory, though I’m unsure if that’s just normal for UE, with or without VRPreview problems- I read somewhere that there was a memory management issue in UE4 that caused similar VRPreview crashes, but couldn’t find any suggested fixes for UE5, if that even could be part of the issue.
Upon suggestion from a different forum, I packaged the game into a build just to see if anything was broken, and when running it standalone on the headset, the game was working as expected.
To give a rundown of my current set-up, I am using a powerful computer provided by my college for game development (unsure of the specs, but it was specifically purchased to teach game design students different programs like UE, so I’m gonna assume the computer specs being unsatisfactory is not the culprit, but perhaps some settings within the computer/engine.) I am working on a VR game, which I have been testing with VRPreview on a Quest 2 headset. I use both Meta Quest Link and SteamVR to run VRPreview, and alternate between airlink or a cabled connection (we just got a new cable for this project, it works well for VRPreview.)
I’m just genuinely so confused on what could have caused VRPreview to just suddenly stop working in such an intense way.
Any help or suggestions for this issue would be really greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
