Using static meshes rather than the terrain tools.

I’m creating a level for the game I’m working on at the moment, the issue i have run into is that the level consists primarily of a floating island (i.e. a height map wont cut it.)

So I’ve started modeling the island from scratch in max. The game is relatively low poly and the terrain Im guessing is going to be approximately 5k min and 40 to 80k max polys.

I cant imagine I’m going to suffer a performance hit for 5K polys and even at 80k (which is the extreme) I dont think it would be pushing it for such a major asset. But i wanted to ask here if there were any other considerations i may have missed?

I’m not too experienced with UE4 yet so any feed back is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
