Use imported mesh UVs for texture projection

Hello there,

I am trying to switch off the automatic unwrapping feature of RC entirely for the following workflow:

  1. Create cloud and mesh via photogrammetry in RC
  2. Export mesh as OBJ
  3. Optimize mesh geometry and UV layout externally
  4. Import optimized mesh back into RC
  5. >>>> reproject textures onto my optimized mesh without altering the UV layout

I can’t find a solution, tried for hours…
Is there an option to do this?

Thanks!

Hi Frank Lochau

Just import the OBJ or FBX and use TEXTURING button. Custom-Imported OBJ with UVs are supported directly and you not need to change anything in RC settings…

Hello Wishgranter,

of course this is exactly what I had tried several times before writing this post. Coming from an Agisoft background, I am expecting certain behaviors which here and there leads to confusion on my side.

I did as you said and again got an automatically exported texture with obviously auto-unwrapped UVs inside my project folder which confused me again.

So I ignored the automatically created output and started an additional, manual export of my mesh in the hope that the tool would also output the texture I am looking for. And this time it worked. I re-exported the mesh with the texture projected onto my custom UVs.

Now I wonder why this process is setup in this (at least for me) (confusing) way. Why is there an automatic export of a totally irrelevant texture file whereas I have to manually export the right one? I’m sure theres a reason for this, but I don’t get it.

Since the export of my customized mesh is not required as it is already available and imported, is it possible to export just the texture of a specific component?

Is there a way to preview a) UVs and b) the resulting texture -before exporting it (and submitting “trial and error data” to you as well) ?

Best regards,
Bodo

Hi Bodo S.

Not possible to export just Tx files. for now its possible to export just whole model + texture.
