Translucent Hair Planes with Dynamic Lighting

So I know that translucent materials aren’t currently compatible with dynamic lighting. When I use the translucent material for hair, it appears too bright. Masked materials are not a good substitute. I can’t find a way to bake lighting into the hair since skeletal meshes don’t seem to support that, but even that would be a very poor solution because of so many different lighting conditions the PC will be in.

What would be the best approach for rendering realistic hair with dynamic lighting? Am I better off going with a high-poly maxfur-to-mesh solution? While I trust Ehamloptiran’s expertise, I’m not sure I can wait for his or Epic’s hair solutions.
