Tesselation on flat surfaces?

Hi I’m trying to apply tesselation to a flat surface (like a roof or wall) but the max it subdivides isn’t nearly enough to display the detail.

Do I need to manually subdivide my meshes on my 3d application if I want them to have tesselation?

(works fine on a sphere, badly on anything else)

You can’t expect it to work in engine on its own.
Subdivide the base mesh into more geometry and the engine will then be able to subdive more
