Tesselation needs to come back, desperately

Well, you are correct to say that, we can still use it, or anything else. That won’t optimize a robust development of UE5 though in the meantime. Tessellation was already working as implemented, but Nanite doesn’t handle skeletal meshes yet, so it’s more labor, work, time, and cost now on everybody’s end. Users here want Tessellation in conjunction with Nanite, not versus Nanite - have the cake and eat it.
