Terrain texture layers - how busy can I get with them?

I followed a tutorial on painting textures in unreal 4 on my terrain. It used 3 textures in the blueprint, and let me create a weighted info layer for each.

So, now, I have naturally began to think… how many layers can I have? What if I want to have 20 layer info pieces on that terrain material in order to get crazy with detail? Is that the way to go for stuff that I wouldn’t necessarily be wanting to create a model for.

Such as dirt paths, trails through forested areas. Additional areas of detail over the other layers, like I may want to scatter stones on my dirt path, etc etc.

Yes you can make quite a few layers with it. As of 4.6, they added the ability to override the maximum texture count in one material (I forget what the term was) But yes, you can.

You can also create texture placement sort of automatically using World Machine. You could do what i do, and instead of creating 3d roads in world machine, simply use the layout generator to create an overlay and export it with a height output and use that as a terrain layer.

I have world machine set up to generate cliffs, dirt inclines, plains, underwater, riverbanks, roads, dirt paths. As well as a separate set of masks for applying all those same features as different layers. So I can have plains with all those rules, then i can have the same rules applied to a forested area, or a canyon style. Simply using masks.

Edit: I replied to your other topic by the way.

I just got done reading your reply on the other thread, I have been waiting ages for a solid conclusion to that thread, and you have cleared it up well!

Also, that is brilliant news about the layers I can add - I take it the extra layers and stuff must be how AAA games do it, or something along those lines…

Thanks!!
