Survival Project - Suggestions/Ect

Good Evening,

I would like to ask for suggestions as well as tutorials, ect on programming, creating my first game, ect. I have no idea how to program but was told that even so that I would not need to have the knowledge or very little in order to create the project I want to create in this game engine. I am also later on down the road interested in having a few members added to my team (IF I GET THAT FAR) on this project.

Alright, now to tell you a little about my project.

I am wanting to start a Survival Game (Yes, I know… Another one) but create an underwater version somewhat like Farsky and Subnautica. I want to take Farsky and turn it into a much more indepth game and add so many new features as I would like to see a great game turn out for all of the ideas that I have to offer. It’s amazing to see what you can do with survival games and wish to make this project into something big. Even if it just turns into something small… Either way, it will be made sooner or later! lol

If you guys want to ask questions or suggest ANYTHING!!! Just say it! I will listen and interact with ya!

When you create such a game, dont forget to include some vehicles -> they are a good way for the player to speed up some stuff + they are fun to play :stuck_out_tongue:

What kind of tutorials do you need?/about which topics?

I was thinking a few small to large vehicles with various add on functions like storage, weapons, ect.

As far as tutorials, anything you can think would be helpful to a beginner dev/programmer

Take my advice and make something that’s not that difficult first. Then another one. Then you may be able to do a rudimentary version of your survival game. Then do it again, better.

Take a look at the game jam contests they hold every week – those are good for learning.

I’ve been a software developer for over a decade, and man, UE was hard to learn deeply, even though it seems so easy topically. Hell, I still kind of suck and I’m a year or more in.

As with anything, you’re going to need to spend hundreds or thousands of hours learning to make anything halfway decent, so get going!

If I could make a suggestion - why not start With Ark:Survival Evolved and make a mod?
The dev kit is available from the unreal launcher, and although its a bit rough (Early Access) it uses the blueprint system from unreal (engine 4.5) and it has a nice underwater system, as well as cool assets from dinosaurs etc, as well as underwater caves etc.

Level design for it is supposed to be pretty easy and it might be a place to get learn the basics - since you focus on a survival game.
