Stopping Destructible mesh from fracturing all the way

Hi all,
I am trying to create a destructible mesh that the player can chip way at. I also want this mesh to have a transparent material on it similar to glass. I have made the destructible mesh just fine, the only problem is when I shoot it anywhere I instantly see all the fracture lines. Is there a way to only have the fracture lines show up that are near the impact or not show the fracture lines at all and just have the pieces break away.

On a side note I would also like to have a column that only has the outside break away and keeps a centre support structure if anyone knows how to do that.
