Somewhere for Sketchfab to Fab newbies to discuss problems

Thank you for the reply.

Where do I start?

I’m here to ask what seems a simple question because it’s one that so far I have been unable to resolve.

I’m also interested if it’s just me who has had certain problems when creating a listing.

I also would like to give my experience of joining Fab to become a seller.

So, the question…

How do I change the thumbnail image to what I see in the Media Gallery view? I thought it would be as easy as pressing save thumbnail and it would appear in the thumbnail image box and then I could see it when looking at my listings…but it seems it’s not that easy!

Of course I have contacted support who informed me “ You should be able to change the thumbnail on the editing page of your model. Does it not let you?”
I responded by saying no and even sending a screenshot of the problem and what I’ve tried.
I’m still waiting for a response.

Update - Today (when I say today I mean that day, not today). I had an email regarding the thumbnail issue from support saying “ We’d be glad to look into this for you. To investigate further, please provide a screenshot or video of the issue you’re experiencing, along with any errors or warnings that occur”.
So once I’ve again sent screenshots and explained what I’m simply trying to do! I’m now waiting for a reply to that email.

Update - Had an email from Sketchfab (YES! It occurred to me I was now dealing with two different support teams, dealing with the same issue, who were not communicating with each other!) who was the first ticket response, who said they see my problem and what I should do is submit the model and it should re-set things so I can try again.
But…I’d already told the second support, who is Fab, that I’d already tried to resolve the issue myself by creating another listing but that has created a similar problem, basically…I still can’t create a thumbnail. So submitting the model to get a re-set wouldn’t have worked.

Update - I decided to send a new support request asking that a senior member of support combines the conflicting responses I’ve had into one single ticket in the hope I can get an answer to what I originally thought would be a straight forward fix.

That was yesterday, I’m still waiting for a reply.

Update - I’m fed up waiting so what I have now done today is rendered a 1K image myself, applied that to the thumbnail and submitted the listing. I expect problems but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. All my migrated listings from Sketchfab were approved in a couple of hours. (I have had another small problem with the listing though! see below about creating the listing ).

Side note - Another fix that was offered to fix my thumbnail issue was that I should migrate the model I was having trouble with from Sketchfab!! I didn’t bother replying and telling them that you can’t migrate individual models, they should know that!

Side note - In the meantime I’ve uploaded my model I’m trying to list on Fab onto Sketchfab and it looks good and so does the thumbnail.

Anyhow, as you can imagine it’s getting a little frustrating trying to resolve this issue. It’s getting on for a week and I’m no further on to resolving it.

So…

What about creating the listing in the first place.

I thought it would be as easy as Sketchfab.

I fill out the description and now for the upload. I see a dialog box that says - Add Media - Upload images or 3D models. So I drop my OBJ and textures into it but not much happens. Puzzled I look around and see - Add new format. So again I add my model and textures. I now see my model but without the textures applied. Okay it’s not automated I think, I must have to do something to attach the textures.
I go to Edit 3D Settings and then click on materials. All I see is the base white material that the OBJ had. Now what? I had no idea as it wasn’t obvious. I couldn’t find any help or advise as to what to do, but thankfully I eventually found what I believe is the only youtube video that showed I wasn’t looking properly so I didn’t see the tiny little box to the right of the dialog box that pops up when you click on the material section. After clicking on the little box I recognised that it was the Sketchfab style upload I was used to. No problems there then.

I know! It doesn’t sound much of a problem, but if it wasn’t for the youtube vid I found I’d still have no idea how to get the textures applied to my model.

I suppose I would have asked support, but that’s not quick.

Listing cont…As I’ve now resolved the thumbnail problem myself I hit submit, it asked if I want to add converted files. I did. But of course when I go to the page to make this happen there is no model showing. I eventually get it to appear somehow, but it has no materials. After a big sigh…I now know how to fix this, so I do.

And at last I have created my own listing from scratch. As I said above, I expect problems but fingers crossed…

I’m am surprised Fab haven’t set up a youtube vid or two on, how to’s, and resolving problems and issues for us newbies.

Lastly…

As for joining fab to sell models…

…Yep it’s a bit of a process but I got there, once I found the right browser to use! It was third time lucky…Safari, Firefox and finally Opera was the winner ! Anyhow, I migrated my models from Sketchfab without a single problem. Models, descriptions and thumbnails all created for me. I had little to do but add the prices. I was a happy bunny. Of course not so much now.

To end…

Sorry…it seems I’ve gone on a bit. Just venting a bit on the frustration I’ve had since trying to create a new listing. Forgive me I’m tied, but It hasn’t been anywhere as easy as uploading to Sketchfab.

Looking forward to when this is a distant memory and I can laugh at the trouble I had creating my first listing.

Is this just me who has had this trouble?
