[SOLVED] Mini Dump during Reconstruction of Laserscans

Hi all,

everytime I want to reconstruct a special area in my RC-project it crashes and the minidump file says there is a virtual adress for which RC has no access rights. This bug keeps appearing in different projects. All projects were captured with 3D laser scanning and exported from Autodesk Recap in .e57 format. I have tried different reconstruction settings but always the same mistake.

Is it a problem caused to the size of the project, the number of scan positions or the density of the pointcloud ?
I noticed that the error mainly occurs in areas where scanning positions are. In one example project we scanned a church from inside and outside. The first time we just imported the half of the scan positions - and well, everything works fine. But when we imported all 50 scan positions RC crashes.

My specs are:

Intel(R) Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz 2.81GHz
32,0 GB RAM
Geforce GTX 1060

It would be great to be able to fix this problem somehow, because I had to fight so far in almost every Laserscan project.

Thank you in advance. Best regards,

Marc

Hello Marc,

your problem might be realted to the problem mentioned here:

https://support.capturingreality.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115002941171-e57-crash-on-import

Also is it possible to try the same scan in the ptx file format?

Hi Zuzana,

thank you for your response. I tried it with the ptx file format, too. We exported the Scans seperated out of Faro Scene, but then the pointcloud had a really bad density, so the mesh wasn’t useful.

In the other thread you had written that you can remove the points with zero coordinate manually. Do you have a tip in which software this would work fine?

Thanks,

Marc

Hello Marc,

we do not have recommendation for a specific one. Every software with the possibility to edit the point cloud and export it as ptx and e57 will do.

Also please make sure that your point cloud is exported as ordered. The requirement for successfull import to RC is that when you create an imaginery ray from the scanner position it does not intersect several surfaces.

Hi Zuzana,

thanks for your response. I think I fix the problem. I tested different export options in different software and finally it works when I exported the scans as ptx seperated out of Faro Scene with deleting overlapping points out of the pointcloud.

Now RC is satisfied and so am I

Best regards,

Marc

Hello Marc,

I am glad to hear that you managed to solve it. If you are satisfied, so we are
