Skeletal Mesh Component to Destructible Mesh?

I’ve built an ice spell which causes characters to freeze into a solid block of ice. This solid block of ice is exactly in the shape of the characters current model and pose.

Now, when these iced over characters take any damage, I want them to shatter into a whole bunch of ice shards. I’m thinking that the easiest way to do this is by creating a destructible mesh and applying a shock to it so that it shatters.

However, I can’t seem to create a destructible mesh from a skeletal mesh. How do I do what I’m trying to accomplish?

It’s not possible to do so via destructible meshes if your characters can freeze at anytime during the animation. What you can do instead is spawn a series of static mesh shards (or maybe 3d particles) along the bone locations.
