Separating Body Parts

Guys,

What is the best practice to get a gunshot to shoot off body parts, i.e. headshot. Do you need to seperate out body parts in the generic UE4 mesh in Maya or similar or is it tied somehow to skeleton so that you can hide/remove through standard UE4 functions? Thoughts?
